The mill-drill is a practical tool used mainly in woodworking. Its main function is to remove swarf so that the workpiece is shaped and free of defects. Note that it is not a tool that can work without a milling cutter. It is not complicated to use, thanks to its versatility. In essence, it works in the same way as a conventional drill, but with the benefits of milling.
It is characterised by a drill press, which has two axes attached to a table. It is important to note that it is designed for simple milling jobs, because its capabilities are not rigid enough to mill large workpieces. However, when mill-drills are used for small milling jobs, they are quite effective, even when operated by beginners.
Although this is a fairly simple tool, it is essential to start by reading the relevant instruction manual before using it, as the instructions may vary from one manufacturer to another. If the instructions are followed properly, the tool can be operated safely.
One of the most important things to check in the manuals is the location of the emergency stop button, so that it can be pressed should any problem arise.
It is also recommended to always wear eye protection when using a mill-drill. Note that the use of gloves is not recommended with this tool, as they may be caught by the machine, causing hand injuries as a result. Likewise, avoid wearing loose clothing, watches, rings, bracelets and similar accessories.
Not all mill-drills are the same, as several types can be distinguished according to their characteristics. It should also be borne in mind that the drill is only one component, whereas the milling machine is the machinery itself.
This is the most common option, since a horizontal mill-drill can be used for special jobs such as grained grooving, which cannot be done with other types of milling machine.
It is important to bear in mind that, to use this type of mill-drill correctly, you need technical knowledge of the maximum depth of the slots you plan to machine. If the maximum values are not known, problems could arise when using the tool.
This is because the depth mentioned above is directly related to the outer radius of the bushes, which must be taken into account so that it is compatible with the spacing it will have in relation to the radius of the cutter.
If you plan to carry out more professional work, it may be more convenient to buy a vertical mill-drill. This is because its internal axis is adjustable, so it can be adapted to the operator's needs. In this respect, it is important to always set it vertically relative to the worktable.
In addition, you will need to choose a milling cutter that fits the spindle of the milling machine, so that the rotation on the axis is regulated according to the workpiece to be machined.
It is worth mentioning that there are two sub-types of vertical mill-drill:
They are characterised by the spindle that shapes the cut remaining stationary. As a result, the only thing that moves is the cutter, which can move both horizontally and vertically.
Unlike the turret type, here the spindle can move perpendicularly, and it is this component that travels around the workpiece parallel to the same axis. Because the movement is more limited, it is geared towards milling jobs that require great precision in small details.
In addition to the types above, there are special types of mill-drill. These machines have features designed to carry out specific jobs.
They have a circular table that allows them to rotate. They allow multiple heads to be installed, each able to deliver a different result.
This is an uncommon type of mill-drill, as it is more complex to use and requires a series of very specific tools to operate. On this machine, milling is done using cross, vertical and longitudinal stops or a template with two tracers.
It has automatic spray cooling and its head can be stopped at the height where the milling is to be done. In most cases they are used to make lock cylinders, hinges or locks.
