The lathe is a machine able to transform a workpiece or object by rotating it about its axis. As it does so, it removes material until the desired result and design are obtained. One of the most common types of lathe is the large spindle bore lathe, capable of shaping surfaces of different forms, materials and sizes.
Large spindle bore lathes play a fundamental role in the metalworking industry. Today, a good part of the production of parts such as valves and fittings is carried out on these machines. The turning process reduces the diameter of the material by means of a cutting tool acting on the workpiece as it rotates about its axis. It can also remove material from the inside in operations such as boring.
One of the main elements of a lathe is the spindle bore. Its diameter is a key characteristic and sets the different lathe models apart. That is why, before buying a lathe for your company, you need to know what your requirements are in order to choose the most suitable spindle bore diameter.
Not without reason, spindle bores make it possible to make large-diameter holes in raw materials. The diameter of a lathe's large spindle bore is measured in millimetres and can range between 80 and 630 millimetres. The range available today is therefore wide, so you can select the large spindle bore lathe best suited to the job in hand.
A large spindle bore also makes it possible to hold large diameters of raw material more easily.
Another reason these lathes are commonly used is the level of safety they offer and their ease of use. The risk of accidents when using a lathe is reduced to a minimum, especially if the machine has computer numerical control (CNC). Any operator can run it without needing a high level of training.
If large spindle bore lathes are known for anything, it is for offering excellent performance in terms of accuracy and productivity. These machines can carry out very accurate heavy cutting, on workpieces of different shapes, sizes and materials. That is why they are usually the most widely used in the leading companies in the industrial sector.
In addition, any company that requires high productivity can use this type of machine. Whatever the demand and production volume to be met, large spindle bore lathes meet the demands of the market.
These lathes also usually have a series of internal ribs that dampen the machine's vibrations. In this way, the operator can work with greater confidence to obtain the best results. In addition, these internal ribs prevent heat distortion and provide lasting stability for the tool.
Other elements and features that this type of lathe may include are:
Large spindle bore lathes can perform many tasks. This is why they are among the most widely used in large industries. Their performance is very high.
On the one hand, these lathes can carry out straight turning (reducing one cylinder from another) or taper turning (giving a workpiece a cone shape). They can also create different contours on a variety of objects and create shapes. Once any workpiece is finished, the lathe can also perform parting off, or cutting off the finished workpiece.
They also carry out chamfering (cutting or relieving an edge of a solid object) and threading (making threads for nuts and bolts). Other very common operations are boring to enlarge holes, and drilling. Large spindle bore lathes are, in fact, very efficient at this task.
Finally, they can perform knurling, which consists of engraving a pattern on the workpiece, grooving (making grooves in workpieces) and facing, an operation based on reducing the length of the workpiece.
Large spindle bore lathes are among the most widely used machines in the industrial sector. In fact, turning is often the first machining operation in a company, since this process gives shape to a workpiece.
